About this work

Description

This film presents an appeal for charitable donations to Queen Charlotte's Hospital in the form of firstly a dramatised scenario of the first few days after giving birth for a young couple attending the hospital, and secondly a direct appeal to the viewer from actress Jessie Matthews, courtesy of Gaumont Pictures. The first part of the film is rather light-hearted with a musical accompaniment. A young woman is settled down to sleep in a hospital bed by a nurse / midwife and dreams of showing off her new baby to friends and family and of settling him in his cot at home. After this sequence we see more of the father as he telephones the midwife to see how his wife and child are. We see him rush home from work to change and visit them in hospital. An amusing dialogue between he and his wife ends their part of the film and the camera focuses on a nurse / midwife describing the work of Queen Charlotte's. Jessie Matthews then reinforces this with panache and appeals for donations to allow the hospital to continue its work and increase its number of beds.
