Pilgrims flock to the Shri Jagannath Temple, in Puri, Orissa province, in Northeast India. In the centre are the three small figures of the god Jagannātha (with black face) with his brother Balarāma and his sister Subhadrā. The English word juggernaut is derived from the name of the god, because worshippers used to seek immolation by throwing themselves under the wheels of the processional car bearing Jagganath's image
