    3. Intestinal. — Ammonia in larffe doses increases the secretion from the intestines, and may cause diarrhoea, and it also neutralises acid secretions. 4. Cutaneous.—Ammonia, more especially in the form of liquor ammonise acetatis, acts fi-eely on the skin. 5. Urinary. — No special action. 3. It is never used as a purgative, but this ii'ritating action on the bowels may render it an undesirable form of stimulant in enteric fever. It is a useful antacid. 4. Liquor ammonise ace- tatis is one of om- best diapho- retics in a gTeat variety of feverish conditions. Finally, ammonia has been employed under various conditions which cannot conveniently be grouped under any precise phy- siological heading; but these we will consider when we refer seriatim to the various preparations of the drug. Poisonous Action. — If Antidotes.—Alkalis, given in large quantities, am- monia may cause death by in- flammation of the stomach and intestines j and, according to Richardson, it may also kill by dissolving the red corpuscles of the blood. Mode of Elimination. Ammonia is very rapidly given out from the system, prin- cipally by the urine, but also in lesser degi-ee by the breath and sweat. Preparations. Ammonise liquor fortior and liquor ammoniae. These are seldom iised internally, but occasionally, as mentioned^above, by vapour and injection.
