About this work

Description

Louis Theroux talks to people who are suffering from the effects of extreme alcoholism - some are slow and steady drinkers and others are binge drinkers; all are connected to Kings College Hospital. In each case Theroux thoroughly investigates their lives - visiting their homes and talking to family members in order to try to understand the patterns and the triggers behind their alcohol abuse. Many of them express feelings of helplessness and bewilderment about the condition. Theroux concludes that many of the people with long-term alcohol addiction tend to be people that take life's challenges too hard and need to anaesthetise themselves against emotional pain. Some of those he meets manage rehabilitation and move into a new phase of life whilst others remain caught in their addiction.
