Seated in armchair, nearly whole length to left facing front, wearing gown, with bone specimen (diseased femur) in glass jar on left. Samuel Cooper was related to the painter of this portrait, Andrew Morton: he was the father of Andrew Morton's brother's wife, and the teacher in surgery of Andrew Morton's brother, the surgeon Thomas Morton
