John Richard Somers Vine CMG (1847-1929). Journalist and civil servant: editor of the Cambridge chronicle and University intelligencer while holding a number of civil service posts, including that of agent to the Colonial Exhibitions (1883-1886) and Assistant Secretary to the Imperial Institute in South Kensington (from 1886). Author of The iron roads dictionary and travellers' route charts of the English and Welsh railways, 1880. Portrayed seated facing the back of a folding chair and smoking a cigar
