English Commonplace Book

A commonplace book containing verses, newspaper cutting, enigmas, and household recipes. Included are an epitaph on the physician Messenger Monsey (1693-1788) (f. 1v.), statistics of traffic over Blackfriars Bridge and London Bridge on one day in July 1811 (f. 27), and anagrams of John Abernethy ('Johnny the bear') and others (f. 32v.). Two items are written on wrappers addressed to 'Mr Poulton, 3 Bow Church Yard', probably the compiler of the volume. This was the London address of Poulton and Cummins, wholesale linen drapers and importers.
