About this work
Description
Advertising broadside for Morison's Pills, or Morison's Universal Medicines and Aperient Vegetable Powders as issued by the British College of Health (New Road, London). It promotes Morison's science of Hygeism which believed in draining the whole body of impurities (such as prussic acid, opium, arsenic, laudanum and mercury) "to eradicate diseases out of different parts of the body", likening it to taking care of a tree. This is shown in the first of two illustrations, of Hygeists under a tree, the College of Health (est. 1828) in the background. The second one (Fallacy of the organic theory of doctors) shows physicians attacking the tree, branch by branch and the tree looking very unhealthy. Traditional medicine is being heavily criticised and satirized.
