Reverses a plate designed by William Cowper, the anatomist, and engraved by Michael Vandergucht, published in James Drake's Anthropologia nova, London 1707, ii, fig. 20. It was later used as an illustration to D. Diderot and J. le R. d'Alembert's Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, vol. 18, Paris 1762, pl. 8, the likely indirect source for the present engraving, just as it was for a skeleton plate after Vesalius, catalogue no. 36316i
