    area, and that slaughtering is done at most irregular and untimely periods.’ Again, in the report for 1904 the Medical Officer of Health for King’s Norton, and Northfield Urban District, speaking of meat inspection, says : ‘ How can this be carried out unless inspection of the slaughtering is possible ? In order that meat inspection can be carried out thoroughly a public slaughter-house is absolutely necessary.’ In the report for the borough of Torquay in 1904, it is stated that ‘ the fact of having so many private slaughter- houses, and also that a considerable amount of meat is brought in from a distance by train, renders the proper inspection of meat impossible.’ And in the report for East Ham for 1902 the medical officer remarks : ‘ The primary object of meat inspection is the de- tection of danger to the consumer of meat offered for sale; its secondary objects are the protection of the public against imposition and fraud, and to aid in the suppression of diseases which are transferable from animal to animal; and I should very much like to see the establishment of a public abattoir and meat depot, for without such no effective control of the meat-supply is possible.’ The following is also important, being an extract from the Annual Eeport on the Health and Sanitary Condi- tion, etc., of the Parish of St. Mary Abbotts, Kensington, for the year 1898, by T.
