Assumed to be set in Buxton, Derbyshire, as an inference from the existence in Buxton Museum of several works by this artist. There were at least three military hospitals in Buxton in World War I

He and the man standing behind him both wear "Convalescent blues", a jacket and trousers issued to convalescent soldiers in one size only

If the initial E is correct, the work is attributable either to Private E. Jones, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, 6th Battalion, service no. 266448, b. 1896, died 18 October 1918, buried in Alexandria, Egypt, or to Private E. Jones, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, 15th Battalion, service no. 54797, b. 1897, died 27 July 1917, buried in Belgium (information from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission)
