    every part of a bone is fubje& to ve- nereal, as well as ftrumous afte&ion. Cafes of white-fwelling, attended with enlargement of bone, have re- covered; and, I believe fuch inftances would have been more frequent, had a remedy been known capable of ar~ refting the progrefs ol the difeafe in the bone ; for, unlefs this can be ac- complifhed, the malady of the bone will go on, until it pervades the joint, and produce thofe effects on the liga- ments, and articulating furfaces of the ends of the bones, as occur in the white-fwelling, where the difeafe firft begins in the cavity of the joint.—• Mr. Pott has afccrtained the efficacy of artificial drains, in checking the progrefs of caries, in difeafed vertebrae, and in reftoiing the fpine, as well as the patient to a date of health : and I feel the greateft fiitisfa&ion in the fuc- cefs
