The situation in which they resided was low and damp, and fevers of the typhoid type were exceedingly prevalent in the neighbourhood. The father, in his youth, had been much re- duced by mesenteric disease, and scrofulous enlargements of the cervical glands ; which, however, after a lapse of years, and’ as he ‘approached manhood, gradually subsided ; when he became, to all appearance, perfectly free from the disease.
