Folded cortex, decalcomania

Inspired by a technique commonly used among neuroscientists, 'Flattened Acrylic' plays with the concept of flattening the folded cortex in the light of a decalcomania, using acrylic on clear film. The painting holds a range of structures resembling cortical folds, cortical layers and neuronal branchings. These structures develop from a controlled morphogenetic mechanism driven by the interaction between the gradient of painting density, the differences in surface tension of the white and black acrylic colors, and the pressure exerted over the clear film.
