"A brief memoir of war years 1939-46" by Dr Nelson Coghill

Reminiscences of Dr Nelson Coghill's service in the Royal Army Medical Corps in the Middle East during the Second World War. Coghill recalls his service in Egypt, Cyprus, Syria and Libya with 27 General Hospital, 82 General Hospital and 15 (Scottish) General Hospital, and recounts leave trips to Palestine and famous sites in Egypt. The volume also includes details of his and Helen Longmore's courtship and marriage in 1940, and their life together following Coghill's return to the UK. The reminiscences take the form of a chronological journal. The volume includes a ground plan of 27 General Hospital, and photographs of RAMC colleagues, the exteriors of 82 General Hospital and 15 (Scottish) General Hospital, and places visited by Coghill.

The volume was given to the library at Wellcome Collection by Dr Nelson Coghill on 8 November 2001.

Dr Nelson F Coghill obtained his MA from Cambridge in 1934 and his MB in 1937, and was elected Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1938. He trained at Westminster Hospital, and worked as a house surgeon at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, joining the Royal Army Medical Corps in December 1939. In 1946 Coghill started work at Hammersmith Hospital, and subsequently worked for over 30 years as a consultant at West Middlesex Hospital. Coghill married Helen Longmore in Liverpool on 8 May 1940, and the couple had two children, Cathy and Jennie. He joined the Labour Party and Fabian Society in 1945 , and in 1951 became a founder member and committee member of the Medical Association for Prevention of War.
