About this work

Also known as

Boring self care

Description

"Self care seems to mean - on the internet anyway - activities you only engage in as a luxury, like the expensive bath bombs or buying fancy crystals. Often activities which cost money, are only "nice activities" or only available for able bodied people. For me, I think even the way that the term 'self care' is used insinuates you haver to do it yourself, shaming and alienating those who need people and carers to do it for them (for whatever reason; physical, emotional and/or neurodiversity etc.) This is not my understanding as a mental health professional. Self care refers to all of the activities we need to do day-to-day and the "self" bit doesn't mean you have to do them entirely by yourself. [...] I really wanted to create something which separated itself from the internet version of self care and give it a new name. I came up with #boringselfcare mostly because I was drawing all the boring things I either find difficult when unwell or can't actually do."--[Page 3]

"Content note: This zine focuses on mental health. Therefore it has the following trigger warnings: mental health, mentions of sexual assault, drawings of self harm scars, an illustration of a syringe/blood, sexual content which may not be safe for work or suitable for children, mention of eating disorders and addiction and finally there are some swear words."--[Page 1]
