Animal research facing the public. Parts 1-11.

A compilation of programmes in favour of animal research for medical purposes. Video no. 1 contains 'A book for doctors' and 'When I was born', both by C. Everett Koop (2 min.). Video no. 2 contains a film, 'Life on the Line' in which teenagers discuss the ethical issues behind animal experimentation. One of the teenagers is against vivisection but is forced to think again when his girlfriend is hit by a car. The teenagers interview various people, both for and against animal experimentation; they also speak to people who need to use medicine in order to stay alive (20 min.). Video no. 3: 'Animals and the human kidney' looks at the importance of animal research for the treatment of people with kidney problems. Experiments on animals are shown and case studies are shown of people undergoing treatments for kidney problems (20 min.). Video no. 4: 'Caring for life,' looks at people who work with animals, experimenting on them and caring for them (10 min.). Video no. 5: 'What about people?' This programme, presented by Pamela Armstrong, looks at the ethical pros and cons of animal experimentation and includes interviews with medical experts and the general public (15 min.). Video no. 6: 'Hope' looks at the work of the Children's National Medical Centre, Washington. Medical staff and parents of patients declare their support for animal experimentation (15 min.). Video no. 7: 'Inside the animal house' takes the viewer on a tour of an animal holding centre by two animal technologists who look after the animals (12 min.) Video no. 8: 'Animal rights and human ills' is introduced by David Bellamy, animal lover and wildlife expert. He states his reasons for being pro- animal research (11 min.) Video no. 9: 'Why I should stay awake in science class' is an amusing film about a young boy who keeps falling asleep during science lessons. He is visited by a guardian teenager who shows him lots of video clips of scientists doing exciting things (11 min.) Video no. 10: 'O'Donnell investigates a life-saver' - Michael O'Donnell looks at the realm of medicine and he interviews, among others, Sir John Vane and Sir Roy Calne about their views on the positive aspects of animal experimentation (12 min.). Video no. 11: 'The alternative is man' shows how closely animal experimentation is monitored by laws and also outlines the current alternatives to using animals (12 min.).
