About this work

Description

Death greets the smoker as "partner". "Partner" as a form of address is said by the Oxford English dictionary to be "chiefly U.S. colloq.", i.e. death is here presented as American, reflecting the conspicuousness of American and Anglo-American tobacco brands. Cf. OED also s.v. "pardner"
