    express our sense of the loss which we are shortly to sustain than by repeating the words of a resolution at which we unanimously arrived when the fact of Dr. Cooke’s appoint¬ ment and the consequent resignation of the office which he has held for 17 years past was made known to us, “ That the Committee accept with deep regret the resignation of Dr. E. Marriott Cooke of his post of Medical Superintendent of the County and City Asylum, while at the same time offer to Dr. Cooke their hearty congratulations upon his appointment to a seat at the Board of the Commission in Lunacy. The devotion displayed by Dr. Cooke to the duties of the Asylum, his management of those duties, the consideration he has displayed for the patients, and his capacity for details under the various large extensions undertaken at the Asylum during the last 15 years, merit the highest commendation of the Committee and enhance their great regret at the termination of his connection with the Asylum.” We feel sure that both the County and City Councils will fully endorse the words of this resolution, while they will join with us in congratulating Dr. Cooke on the recognition which the Lord Chancellor has exhibited to his fitness for the office to which his Lordship has appointed him. We are proceeding to the appointment of a new Medical Superintendent, which will be duly reported to the Councils. The conduct of the other Officers of the Asylum and of the Attendants generally has been satisfactory. bio changes of any moment have been made in the Staff, and the increase which we intimated in our last Report it was probable we should have to make on the completion of the new buildings then in progress has only been partially made, as those buildings are not quite ready for occupation, having some additions still to be made. 3.—We have held 12 monthly meetings and one special meeting. The House Committee have met bi-monthly as required by the rules, while the several Sub-Committees have met as occasion required. We have, during the year, had to deplore the loss of a very valued member of our Committee, Mr. Robert Berkeley, who for some years past has acted as our Chairman, and who, during the period of his connection with the Asylum, devoted so much time and attention to its interests and to the care and well being of its inmates.
