About this work

Description

With a wealth of droll humour and in his own inimitable style, Dr. Peter Williams (Director of the Wellcome Trust, 1965-1991) traces the origins and development of the Wellcome Trust and its activities in support of medical and medical-historical research from the initial creation of the Wellcome Foundation by Sir Henry Wellcome's first will of 1913 down to the present time (i.e., 1985). Delivered to a Burroughs Wellcome audience at Research Triangle Park, N. Carolina, with most of the then Wellcome Trustees in attendance. An instructive and often illuminating guide to the Trust's history, and a very interesting reminder of the days when the Trustees were the sole shareholders of the Foundation and "Research", as Dr. Williams reminds his audience, "...[was] your only stockholder". Includes edited highlights of the question-and-answer session following the lecture.
