Brain: cerebral toxoplasmosis and HIV

Cerebral toxoplasmosis This is a coronal slice of the brain of an HIV-positive adult with encephalitis caused by toxoplasmosis. This patient had received no therapy. The ventricles are compressed (by oedema). The foci of toxoplasmosis are haemorrhagic and necrotic; the left basal ganglia are particularly affected. Generalized and focal symptoms such as seizures, hemiplegia and personality change occur in cerebral toxoplasmosis.
