About this work

Description

Saint Simon Stylites the younger stands in a pulpit at the top of a column, curing the people below him with his blessing. Below left, a man (epileptic?) being released from possession by a devil (the devil is flying out of his mouth); below right, a lame man with a crutch, a woman with a baby in swaddling clothes, and a priest. In the background, buildings of the city of Antioch

"As in the case of most of the other pillar saints a large number of miracles were believed to have been worked by Simeon the Younger. In several instances the cure was effected by pictures representing him (Holl in "Philotesia", 56)."--Herbert Thurston in The Catholic encyclopedia, New York 1912, vol. 13, pp. 795-796
