    Vomiting and great depression ire liable to be produced in the human subject even by mode- rate doses. action, it is now rarely used, in comparison with compound jalap powder, which seems to fulfil the same useful indica- tions without an equal chance of seriously weakening the patient. Dose from y1^ gr. to J gr.; or, of the compound powder, \ gr. to 5 gr. ASSAFCETIDA. Physiological Action. A good deal of digestive listurbance seems to follow he administration of this drug o healthy persons; but the vidence is too conflicting to nable us to lay down any ixact scheme of its influence n the various functions of the ody. Therapeutical. Assafoetida has been used and recommended in a con- siderable variety of affections, but practically it is now only prescribed in flatulent dyspep- sia and in hysteria, where its excessively nauseous smell and taste are supposed to give it an advantage over other drugs of the same class. The most commonly used preparation is the spiritus ammonias fcetidus. Dose, i fl. drm. to 1 fl. drm. The enema is useful in flatu- lence. CONIUM. Local Action. Conium has been occasionally used in the form of poultice as n application to cancerous sores or tumours, and it is said that jie severe lancinating pain common to these affections may thus e mitigated. q 2
