Description
The sitter was 3' 10" tall, and a page to Charles I. He was a gifted artist, especially of miniatures, and was instructed by Francis Cleyn and Sir Peter Lely. He became drawing master to Princess Mary and Anne. The figure in the small roundel is Anne Shepherd, the sitter's wife; she was also a dwarf. They had nine children, five of whom survived and were all of normal stature.
