About this work

Description

"Art and Value is an exhibition consisting of work made by four artists in conversation with researchers from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), King's College London. the main question artists and researchers asked themselves was 'what do we measure and why?' and subsequently, 'what does art help us to value?' The idea of value is of particular importance for the Bethlem Gallery, situated as it is within a busy psychiatric hospital. There are many people who frequent the Gallery, all with different expectations and experiences. The models for measuring value in the wider hospital environment are various and seem sometimes to contradict one another. In this context, where medical models tend to dominate, artists are able to communicate the complex intersections between the medical and social, offering personal perspectives on systems that can at times feel de-humanising."--Page 1
