About this work
Description
David Modell goes undercover to document the work of various animal rights activists. We follow activist Johnny in his campaigns to get New Church Farm, which breeds guinea pigs for experimentation, closed. He resorts to robbing a family grave and promises to give back the stolen body on condition that the farm is closed - he wins. We follow another set of activists on a march to try to prevent a new animal research lab from being built in Oxford - activist Mel talks about how the thought of animals being tortured troubles his mind. Gail, another activist, has congenital scoliosis and suffered much physical discomfort as a young child. She and her mother travel around doing street demos and visiting businesses that have shares in Huntingdon Life Sciences. Another activist, Keith, has been imprisoned on numerous occasions for his attempts to sabotage a chicken farm. This documentary is different to other programmes on similar subjects in its attempt to get the activists to speak about what it is inside them that leads them to become 'compulsive activists.' The programme ends with Johnny being imprisoned on a 12 year sentence for the grave robbery.
