Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn or May-tree)

Shows dense spray of 'may' flowers against dark green leaves. It is best known for a traditional medication for the heart, but the bark has also been used in cases of malaria and other fevers. The berries are edible but insipid although an alcoholic drink, similar to cider, has been made from fermented fruit. Hawthorn wood is popular in carpentry. NICE
