After a painting: "In April or early in May 1824 Danby moved suddenly and secretly from Bristol to London leaving substantial debts behind him. A few weeks later 'Sunset at sea after a storm' (Bristol Museum and Art Gallery) was shown at the Royal Academy and purchased by the president, Sir Thomas Lawrence. Although it is essentially a marine landscape painting rather than a history painting, Sunset at sea after a storm, with its raft of shipwrecked survivors, was certainly inspired by Géricault's Raft of the Medusa (Louvre, Paris). Danby did not see this enormous painting when it went to London in 1820, but he later acknowledged that he knew it well through enthusiastic descriptions by his Bristol friends."
