A detailed presentation of the natural history of curare and of the physical chemistry, experimental pharmacology, observed physiological effects and major clinical applications of the muscle relaxant d- Tubocurarine, the active constituent of South American arrow poison ("tube curare") Includes interesting close-up studies of the clinical use of d- tubocurarine -- (a) to relax the muscles (and hence the amplitude of the spasms and convulsions) of psychiatric patients undergoing ECT; -- (b) as a spinal and deep general anaesthetic in stomach cancer surgery.
