About this work
Description
The first in a series of four programmes looking at some of the more unexpected workings of the mind. Following heart transplant surgery 5-10% or people note changes in their character. Can this be put down to having memories from the donor transplanted along with the heart? This possibility has led scientists to question whether the heart is just an organ to pump blood or is also connected to our emotions. Cardio-Neurologist Paul Pearsall and Gary Schwartz both believe in a connection between the heart and our personality, while Neurologists Magdi Yacoub and Jack Copeland don't. Most interesting to hear is the research of Andrew Armour and Rollin McRaty who believe they have discovered brain cells and neurons in the heart muscle giving it what they call 'heart intelligence.'
