About this work

Description

This documentary in two parts is about Broadmoor; the hospital and psychiatric prison historically known as a 'criminal lunatic asylum'. This programme gives unprecedented access to the hospital and its patients. The hospital is notorious for its most famous killers. Many of the patients's full identities are (partially) hidden and only those able to give consent were able to take part. The staff are also briefed not to disclose anything about their private lives. Ken Wakatama, Clinical Nurse Manager, works with many of the most mentally disordered and violent patients. There are 15 wards; patients who present less risk and are recovering are sent to a lower dependency ward - there is some movement between the wards back and forth. 'Daniel' reveals a little of his past; he has been institutionalised for 10 years. All movements are tracked via CCTV to ensure that certain patients do not mix. One of the problems with psychiatric medication is obesity; many of the patients are severely overweight. Dr Amlan Basu, Clinical Director, has to balance whether they are perpetrators or victims. Food is a big issue for the inmates. 'Lenny' produces artwork on his ward; he's not happy being incarcerated in Broadmoor. He's medicated against his will for his increasingly manic behaviour. Dr Fin Larkin is Lenny's psychiatrist and comments on his recent case history. Estelle Moor organises psychological therapy for the patients which is long-term in many cases. An unidentified patient who is physically and verbally agressive is contained in his room and the staff only narrowly avoid assault.
