    84 GENERAL GENETICS Table 3* ^ (0 - E)^ We can illustrate this with the example of congenital cataract which is inherited as a dominant and which would be expected in half the offspring. We examined 48 persons, of whom 22 showed the disease and 26 were normal, as shown in Table 4. By referring to Table 3, one notes that the value 0.33 is intermediate between the values 0.15 and 0.45, with corresponding probabilities of 0.7 and 0.5. It follows that the observed discrepancy between the expected and observed figures is probably due to chance since in a sample of 48 persons, one expects to meet such differences in 50 to 70% of the cases. There is no significant discrepancy then between the theoretical ratio of 1:1 and the observed distribution; the character is thus in fact inherited as a dominant. BIOMETRY AND HEREDITY How can we calculate probabilities or statistical significance for each type of inheritance?
