About this work

Description

Saint Luis Beltrán (1526-1581) was born in Valencia, Spain; joined the Dominican Order; and served as master of the novices for thirty years. Hoping to be martyred, he asked to be sent to Central America. He returned to Spain seven years later unharmed. In the painting he holds a cup containing a poisonous snake and renders it harmless by his blessing. In the background, the saint preaching in Panama or Colombia
