    Section E. mSPECTlOl^ OF FOOD AMO FOOD PREMISES Regular inspection of meat at the five slaughterhouses in the Borough forms a major part of the duties of the staff. A total of 1132 visits were made for this purpose and 94 per cent, of all animals slaughtered were inspected. Four private slaughterhouses were licensed and 38 slaughterhouse licences issued. Byelaws relating to the sanitary condition of private slaughterhouses became operative on 5th November, 1956. Altogether 7 tons 19 cwts. 1 qtr. and 17 lbs. of foodstuffs were condemned as unfit for food. Under Section 107 of the Public Health Act, 1936, one firm’s premises was registered for gut scraping. Extensive sampling was undertaken regarding contamination of dried and frozen imported egg. Of 33 samples taken 5 were reported as being contaminated by salmonella organisms. Bakers were advised not to use these imported products and the whole matter referred to the Ministry of Health.
