A scholar seated at a table holds with his left hand a wicker basket from which he has extracted a flask of urine which he holds up to the light with his right hand. On the table are books, one of which is open showing scholarly text printed in two columns, assumed to elucidate the different colours and textures of urines, and their medical significance. In the background, a pestle and mortar for grinding the ingredients of medicines
