About this work

Description

Even though it has been a legal medical procedure for over 30 years and there are over 500 abortions performed in the UK every day there are still many people who feel abortion should be made illegal. Some campaigners want to make this an election issue as they feel that if the public knew the truth about the procedures of late-term abortions in particular they would vote against it. We hear about the ethical dilemmas faced by doctors who perform both early and late-term abortions - John Parsons performs late-term abortions and he describes how emotionally upsetting he finds it. There is also a debate as to whether or not the unborn foetus can feel pain or distress at 24 weeks gestation. A woman describes how she decided to abort her 6-month old unborn child after discovering it had Down's Syndrome and doctors describe how difficult it is to determine which children with disabilities should be made legally viable for extremely late-term abortions.
