Description

Nuku-Hiva, a northerly island in the Marquesas, was the centre of the French administration after the group was annexed by France in 1842. On the left of the present picture is a group of French sailors. In the centre, a pig is being slaughtered for the funeral feast. Behind, the hut in which the body rests, and outside it a drummer
