    perfectly acquainted with the practical part of the breeding and feeding of domestic ani- mals than I am with the internal structure or anatomical illustration of the animal cecono- my ; but as I have so long been situated so near to the centre of the breeding system, and have had such frequent opportunities of conversing on the subject, and knowing the opinions of gentlemen of the first agricultu- ral abilities, I consider myself more particu- larly called upon to guard the present state of practical improvements against the myste- rious delusions of scientific representation. If any of the great breeders had published a description of the present state of the sub- ject, I should not have presumed to give my opinion ; but when an important branch of that profession, which I so long have made the first object of my attention, is brought forward in illustration of a subject with which it has no natural connection, I hope I
