About this work
Description
The last in a four-part series following nine children as they fight childhood leukemia. This part looks at 7-year-old Jack, 16-year-old Jasmine and 14-year-old Jake who all have the most common form of leukemia - acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The methods of treating this kind of leukemia have improved greatly since the 100% death rate in the 1950s to the now nearly 90% survival rate but all three children in this episode are experiencing complications. Jack was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 5 and has been treated by Great Ormond Street for two years but has now relapsed and is facing a very aggressive treatment of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. Jasmine has been having treatment for two years for a very resistant form of leukemia with a strong possibility of relapse. Her family opted for the strongest treatment available which she is now at the end of and everyone is worried that she will suffer a relapse. Jake finished his long leukemia treatment when he was 9; he is now 14 and despite having been free of the disease for 5 years it has returned. Both Jasmine and Jake suffer psychologically from the repeated treatments and long hospital stays. Jack develops a serious fungal lung infection and his bone marrow transplant is put on hold. Against the odds, all the children survive and make full recoveries.
