About this work
Description
This is the first in a six-part series which uses cutting edge computer graphics and rare footage to show how the body fights for survival against the odds of trauma, illness and accident. This part focuses on the trauma of birth whether it be a natural birth or a birth tinged with danger. We follow four births. One is straightforward, one is complicated by the baby's suffocation by the umbilical cord during a caesarian section, another is life-threatening when the baby in the womb has inhaled his own faeces and has to be rushed to Great Ormond Street Hospital for emergency treatment. The last is a boy who has developed a tumour at the base of his spine while in the womb. The tumour has grown too large for him to be delivered vaginally and we see him delivered by cesarian section and follow his surgical treatment afterwards. Throughout we are shown animated graphics of what the body is doing to try to ensure the survival of the child after birth.
