About this work

Description

The programme deals with facial disfigurement resulting from acid attacks in Pakistan. It features several women who have been attacked showing how their faces and lives have been affected. The programme follows Dr. Mohammad Jawad, a London based plastic surgeon, who returns to his country of birth to help the victims of acid attacks. Dr. Jawad came to prominence for his work to help reconstruct Katie Piper's face after she was attacked with acid in London. There are over 100 acid attacks a year in central Pakistan but very few cases are taken to court. Bilquis Siddique of the Acid Survivors Foundation explains the scale of the problem in a safe house for the female victims. A Pakistani Member of Parliament, Marvi Memon, is seen discussing possible changes in the law and later she is seen in parliament introducing a new law. The programme focuses on two women who have been attacked, Zakia and Rukhsan. With legal help from Mrs Sarkar Abbas, Advocate High Court, Zakia's husband is prosecuted. Zakia is shown undergoing surgery. Dr. Ankelsaria, an optical surgeon is brought in to advise but reconstruction is not possible and a prosthetic eye is made for her. Rukhsan was also attacked by her husband but her story is different. She returns to live with her husband, who denies the attack. Surgery to reconstruct her face is delayed because she becomes pregnant.
