Notes

The following description was provided by James Gardiner: "A group of seamen in fancy dress costumes on board HMS Danae. One wears a badge 'Baltic 1919', whence this newly- built ship was bound in the autumn of 1919 to assist White Russians during the Russian Civil War. The two black-face figures in centre and top left are wearing make-up copied from the famous music-hall clown 'Chirgwin', billed as 'The White Eyed Kaffir'"
