Material re development by Henri Spahlinger (1882-?) of a controversial vaccine treatment for tuberculosis, 1909-1929, and press-cuttings re public reaction to his claims 1932-1939.

These volumes were given to the Contemporary Medical Archives Centre in August 1997 by Captain R W Warwick, Marine Superintendant, Cunard Line Ltd. They were discovered among the Medical Department records of the Cunard Line, but appear to have no connection with the Line.

Henri Spahlinger, a Swiss, devised a vaccine treatment for tuberculosis during the first decade of the twentieth century. It gained considerable acclaim from some (see Sir Lyndon Macassey and C W Saleeby (eds.) 'Spahlinger contra tuberculosis 1908-1934: an international tribute, 1934), but was rather contraversial (see SA/BMA/G.139-140, and the discussion of Spahlinger in Barry Smith, 'Guillible's Travels: tuberculosis and quackery 1890-1930', 'Jounal of Contemporary History', Vol. 20, 1985).
